Alpe d’Huzes is a Dutch initiative to collect money for the KWF, the official, national body in Holland for the fight against cancer. All donations are directly given in full to the KWF.
Alpe d’Huzes (number 6 in Dutch is “zes”) is a non-timed event. By participating, each cyclist guarantees certain amount of sponsorship. In Holland, the whole country (companies, shopkeepers, craftspeople, VIP and individuals) rallies together. Many donations are collected, rather like the Téléthon in France or Comic Relief in the UK.
In 2013, Alpe d’Huzes was organised for the seventh consecutive year in Oisans. The incredible sum of 29 million euros in donations was collected! Since its creation in 2006, Alpe d’Huzes has gathered 118 million euros.
A great number of people is expected on road RD211 leading to Alpe d’Huez. This road stays open to all vehicles during the event.
