For the 12th consecutive year, the two sponsors renew their commitment to the Alpe d’Huez EDF Triathlon: a unique triathlon, held in magnificent surroundings and listed on several occasions among the most beautiful in the world.
Unique as the swimming contest is held in the crystal clear waters of the Lac du Verney, exclusively open to athletes during the competition. Indeed, the French electricity board sponsoring the event (EDF) halts the hydroelectric plant – the most powerful in France – of which the lake forms a part. Competitors are therefore lucky enough to swim in clear water at an altitude of 700 m, surrounded by green peaks. It may even take their minds off the somewhat chilly water!
Unique as the “Long” programme cycling contest takes in two mountain passes, the Col de l’Alpe du Grand Serre (1375 m) and the Col d’Ornon (1 371 m), together with the mythical ascent of the 21 switchbacks up to Alpe d’Huez. Unique, finally, as once the bikes have been discarded, the running takes place in the majestic setting of the resort of Alpe d’Huez. The route, combining roads and mountain paths, consists of three 7.3 km loops. A final, high-altitude effort, confirming that the Alpe d’Huez EDF triathlon is indeed one of the top international triathlon competitions…
